A good webcam is essential for remote work and we advise that you should buy as high quality a camera as you can afford.  Better cameras will produce good crisp images even in low light, include autofocus, have a wide field of view and are able to zoom in or out without losing quality.  The better webcams will also have dual microphones and capture good quality sound.  Good quality cameras are a little more expensive but are vastly superior to the cameras built into laptops and the webcams selling for $30 or less.

This review looks at the Logitech c930e Webcam, which tends to be billed as a business webcam, but don’t worry too much about that, this camera is suitable for home as well as business use.

Logitech have a long history in making webcams together with video conferencing systems and solutions. This is one of their best webcams yet.  It produces crisp pictures with good colour reproduction even in poor light.  The camera autofocuses and includes a 90 degree wide field of view and multi-level zoom.  The software allows you to adjust light levels if you’re in a poorly lit environment. This is a pretty useful streaming camera too, allowing 1080p over-the-Internet HD streaming at 30 frames per second.

Lens quality plays big in image reproduction in any camera and tends to sort the cheap and nasty from the quality cameras.  The Logitech c930e has a high quality Carl Zeiss glass lens.

The mount is pretty good too, clipping on to screens and laptops with aplomb and allowing plenty of adjustment to get the camera at the right level for you.  Installing the camera is very simple, you just need a USB port 2.0 or higher and the rest is plug and play.  We also like the built in privacy cover which you can clip shut when the camera isn’t in use.

The webcam has dual stereo microphones with built-in noise suppression.  It’s a high quality and sensitive microphone, as you can see from the video below.  The video also demonstrates the autofocus on the camera.

Conclusion
